Bianor participates in the “Science meets practice to reduce the need for antimicrobials in animals” meeting

Bianor has participated in the 2022 “Science meets practice to reduce the need for antimicrobials in animals” meeting, organized in Bologna (Italy) by the HealthyLivestock project and the Schippers group. First of all, we want to thank the organizers for enabling us to present in this very insightful meeting.

The NeoGiANT project for substituting natural extracts participated in this meeting with two talks and three posters presenting the aims of the project and some specific aspects. Bianor rewiever the situation of the animal artificial insemination (AI) sector regarding antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance.

This is possibly a less known aspect of antibiotic use, deserving a bit more attention. For instance, more than eight million liters of semen extender are used yearly only in the EU. That means, millions of sows repeatedly exposed to small antibiotic doses (each AI dose containing about 80 ml, with several grams of antibiotic), and most of it is lost out of the females due of reflux, implying a constant loss to the environment.

In our talk and poster, Dr. Martínez-Pastor exposed the alternatives to antibiotic use in artificial insemination. We also presented some details on NeoGiANT work package 6 about development of semen extender replacing the natural extracts produced in the projects for antibiotics.

Our presentation «Perspectives for antibiotic replacement in semen diluents and the neogiant approach» was presented on 23 June 2022 in the meeting. You can download the abstract in this link.
